| Personal History | A Starfleet brat, Benjamin was the youngest of three sons and born on Starbase 11. His family had a long and distinguished history in Starfleet going back generations. Because of his parents frequent assignments, Ben grew up on many starships and it was an unspoken expectation that he, and his brothers, would join Starfleet. Due to both of his brothers being outgoing and excelling in either their studies or sports, Ben grew up more timid and uncomfortable with attention on him. Despite loving his family he was both in awe of his family and intimidated by them, afraid he would not be good enough for them. Like both of his brothers, he participated in sports as a child and competed with other children within the fleet in games and competitions. Because of this, he became known as being friendly and a solid team player, but quiet and not standing out, even if he was successful. Benjamin was considered a slightly above average student academically, but he was noted to have incredibly fast reflexes when it came to sports. Because of this, and a desire to be different from his family and not constantly be compared to them, he enrolled in Starfleet to be a pilot. Having some distance from his family's reputation, Ben began to come out of his shell somewhat and developed a social life while at the Academy. He developed a small but close-knit group of friends that he would often spend his time with. It was within this group of friends he met his first girlfriend, Alice Walters. They began dating the start of their third year throughout their entire time at the Academy. Alice tried to teach him how to play the trumpet, herself a Jazz musician, but he didn't have the natural skills and soon gave up. Ben was devastated when the night of their graduation Alice broke up with him, citing the fact she was assigned as a junior science officer to a ship scheduled for a three year exploration mission in deep space and would not have the opportunity to see each other in that time. When Ben took his assignment on the USS Anchorage, he went into a deep depression and hardly socialized and instead just went through the motions of the day. After four years on the Anchorage, the unique opportunity arose to help test experimental spacecraft in the shipyards of Utopia Planitia. It was the change in his life that Ben needed. He began to feel alive again as he tested the spacecrafts and being valued for his input to the Engineering Corps. After three years at the shipyards, Ben became restless and put in a request for reassignment to a ship and was transferred to the USS Andromeda. |
