Visitation

Mission: Mission 3 - Whom gods destroy ...
Location: Syvar's quarters
Timeline: MD6, 1900 hours
1415 words - 2.8 OF Standard Post Measure

Ever since his first encounter with the mirror Fox, and then later the rear Fox, Syvar hadn't really spent much time in his own quarters. And now, he just didn't feel like it was home. Being here made him feel anxious, as if anything bad could happen any second.

He had tried to meditate after meeting with the counselor but it was useless. He sat cross-legged on the floor, loose robes wrapped around him and his eyes were closed. He was really trying, but he just couldn't put himself at ease. Sighing when the chime went, he opened his eyes. "Come," he called out.

Jon had had most of the day to process his conversation with Fox. He was calmer but that still didn't mean he liked this development. However he found himself checking in on his doctor. He hoped to all the goddesses, Fox was not in there repeating the previous night right now.

Fortunately, Syvar was alone and just climbing to his feet when the captain walked in. "Captain," he greeted as soon as he recognized his visitor. "Can I get you anything? Please pardon my appearance, I was trying to meditate."

"I'll take a mug of tea," Jon said simply. "How are you feeling?" He wondered if Syvar would share the news of recent developments.

"Quite well, all things considering," Syvar answered as he went to get the tea, and got one for himself as well. He gestured towards the couch as he sank down in his comfortable chair. "I've been seeing the counselor, and I've not been working. I even refused Lieutenant Fox's medical because I'm relieved. I had the EMH do it instead." He paused. "I had remained in sickbay after surgery, sleeping in the office."

"Why?" Jon asked taking the tea. It made no sense to him. If recovering from surgery why not be in biobed like a patient should be.

"Because I felt more comfortable there," Syvar answered slowly, "When I woke up I was just sitting at the desk, staring at a blank screen. I haven't seen any patients, and I didn't stay long. I did talk to Lieutenant Fox...our Fox. We spent some time together." He sipped at his tea. "She wanted me to do her check up, I had to say no. The EMH did it instead, and cleared her."

"Good and I'm glad you got the EMH to do it," he said calmly. "And I know you and our Fox spent some time together. She told me. I can't say I'm happy with this development but its not like I can do anything about it now it's happened. I just don't think it was a wise move jumping into ….. things." he settled on. "You could have PTSD from …. well the other stuff. But she seems generally concerned with your wellbeing. A view we share."

"I know it isn't wise, I even told her such," Syvar countered, "but she made me feel different. Safe... and I desperately needed that feeling. And, she's kept me from going to see...her. I haven't even thought about it again, I don't need it anymore. I'm getting better captain, I promise. And I'm seeing the counselor too, because I want to. I need to, but most of all, I just want to be me again. And she's helping me to be me again. I couldn't have come this far, without her help."

Jon nodded. Well they did have excellent counselling staff, although he was probably biased. "Good. Then I assume she will make the recommendation that you would be safe to return to work in due time."

"In due time," Syvar nodded, even though he was eager to get back to work. "But I need to deal with this my way, and with the counselor's help. And with Amelia's help." He sighed softly. "We...connected," he added, "it's odd, I can't explain it. And it wasn't me who took the first step either." He shook his head. "We'll be fine sir, I will be fine, I just need time to give it all a place."

"As long as it doesn't interfere in your duties and you don't disobey direct orders again then I'm happy. And I am happy for you. I know how wonderful having someone is. My relationship with Counselor Keading is progressing. Very positive," he shared.

"Counselor Keading has allowed me on limited duty, with certain restrictions," Syvar reported happily, "she said I can't treat patients and the guard stays, but at least I can work for a few hours again. I don't want to go too fast but I'm happy I can go places again. Within reason of course." Obviously he wasn't to aimlessly wander the ship. "However...I was wondering sir, if perhaps I could go to the arboretum or the holodeck too..." He hoped he wasn't going to stretch his limited privileges with this request.

"I'll allow the arboretum. And limited holodeck programmes. If its to help you with meditation, centering and recovery," Jon said reasonably. At least he had asked him and not just taken it upon himself.

"Mostly to entertain walks and getting lost sir," Syvar explained, "I like getting myself lost in the woods, it's very relaxing to me. Meditation isn't something I'm very good at, I've tried it numerous times. Just clearing my mind during a walk in the woods is more effective."

"Certainly sounds like meditation, centering and recovery to me," Jon quipped. "I'm happy with that. Right I'm going to get off. Remember this is a process. Its not going to happen overnight." He drained his tea and stood up.

"I understand sir, and I have no expectations of me getting over this on one day sir." Syvar nodded as he stood as well. "I have help sir, and I'll accept all the help I need. I can't do this alone but as I explained, I need to be active. Being stuck, on my own, isn't good for me. So I'm grateful for the light duty, if only to be out there, among people."

"Well lets hope we can get you back up to proper duty in time. Thank you for the tea. Have a good evening," Jon said with a smile heading for the door. out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw some small rodent shoot across the floor.

"There you are!" Syvar exclaimed, quickly snatching the baby rat up from the floor, cradling the wiggling creature to his chest. "I missed you.... you need a name...." He looked up. "Sir!" he called out, holding up the black and white rat. "Can I ask a favour?"

"As long as its not "will you look after my …" he peered at it and wrinkled his nose. "Rat for me. I'm not very good with pets. I'm really trying with a cat but I think rat is a little to far out my comfort zone."

"Oh no sir!" the younger man exclaimed, "you see... I've never had a pet before and I found this one in sickbay a few days ago. Oh don't worry, the rest is taken care off too, they're all gone.... Anyway..." He hesitated, showing some of his old self with the way he seemed to be trailing off. "Pets need a name right? How do I name it? Her... I think.... I think it's a her..."

"Well first of all determine if its a her," Jon said. "If its a he, he may need to be neutered. I don't want the Andromeda suddenly infested with rats Syvar. And well you normally just pick a name you like. I mean some people name them after famous rats … there was one on earth. An archaic tv show. Roland rat. There you go, toss that one in the hat to think about. My contribution."

"I will.... consider it," Syvar lied smoothly, "and I'll make sure there'll be no more little rats, at least not from mine."

Jon laughed inwardly. Syvar just lied to an empath and thought he had got away with it. Well he had given him enough headaches lately. Him not wanting to use his name suggestion didn't bother him enough to call him out on it. He was pretty down right now he would let him have a victory.

"Goodnight doctor," he said taking his leave.
