Glancing down at his PADD, Michael noticed something he had placed upon his calendar. It was there blinking at him with great insistence. For the life of him, at that moment, he couldn't remember why he had placed it there. Tapping at symbol it opened up revealing his reminder. He hadn't gone to see Dr. Syvar in medical as of yet! It has been at the very least a month or so, since his arrival on the Andromeda, and he had been getting familiarized with the ship. For some reason, he hadn't gotten to Medical. Hence the message to himself, in rather terse notations with several exclamation points.

"Hawkins, meet with the Doctor!!!! Don't forget this time!!"

Chuckling ruefully at the reminder, Michael decided to he'd better heed his own message. With that, he headed to Medical to see if the doctor was in.

"Oh hello ensign," Syvar greeted with a smile. The boyish doctor waved at one of the beds, indicating the other man should sit. "What can I do for you?"

"Well, even though its only been a couple of months or so since I've seen a medical doctor since my last assignment. It is protocol to come see the medical officer of my new post. Also with my being chief of operations. I also wanted to see if there was anything I can get for you, things you need or perhaps want. Plus, I wanted to get to know another crew member of this ship. " taking a seat on the indicated bed, his dark grey eyes filled with friendliness.

The Vulcan smiled. "Well, I don't need anything at present and everything seems to be in working order so far, but I'm sure to page you, should the need ever arise," he promised, while pulling on his black leather gloves and picking up a tricorder. "Anything I need to know about you? Any allergies or ailments since your last check up?" In contrast to his patient's dark eyes, his own green eyes sparkled brightly with curiosity.

"No allergies, or ailments since my last check up." Hawkins responded. "My last assignment was on the USS Brixham, where I had my last check up." A brief look of sadness showed in his eyes. "She was decommissioned not too long ago. A very lovely ship she was. Kind of hard watching her being retired. It was difficult for my grandpa to see her retired as well."

"You served with your grandfather?" the curious doctor asked as he started his scans, "how unusual... or was the vessel a generational ship? A family trade vessel?" His ignorance showed in his questions, as he made it a habit not to read too much into crew personnel files. He preferred to make his own conclusions.

"My grandfather had been captain of the USS Brixham for some time. He had retired before I served on the USS Brixham. As a matter of fact, I had been rather surprised and pleased to have been able to serve on the ship, even though it wasn't under my grandfather. The USS Brixham was a science vessel."

"Did your parents serve on it too?" Syvar asked. "I have never served on any vessel with a family member. I only have my parents, no other family that I am aware of. I have no siblings. Do you have siblings?"

"My parents never served on board the ship. My mother is part of the historical society which helps to preserve the history of Brixham. My father is part of the transportation operations. My mother's father, Grandpa Cole, runs a tour for people to experience what it is like to sail on a tall ship. I served with him on the HMS Miranda during the summers before i joined the academy." Hawkins smiling now as he thought of his family. " I do have siblings there are five of us. There are the oldest girls, twins. Kate and Ariana. Kate is the older of the twins. Then I am the third child, next there is Elizabeth, then the youngest is William. I am considered the middle child."

Syvar nodded. "I grew up on Earth, though I can't recall ever having been on a sailing ship." He saw the smile and offered one of his own. "Do you have a family of your own?" he asked as he completed his scans.

"Not married, nor have anyone of my own currently not even children." gives a simple one shoulder shrug. "Haven't met anyone that interested me enough to get married. There were a few who wanted to get married, but, just weren't the right fit personality wise."

"You are still young," Syvar mused as he closed his tricorder and set it aside, "and very healthy. I'm not married either. I wasn't bonded as a child, and I haven't found the right partner yet either. Though the fact that I probably will have my first Time soon, perhaps in a few years, scares me, I'm sure I'll find someone suitable before then." He smiled encouragingly. "I suppose you'll not need your shots just yet then? Or shall I give them to you regardless." He reached for a hypo and inserted a small vial. "Can't hurt to have contraceptives, right?"

"I suppose not, though I er... don't engage in that activity to need the contraceptives, but better to be prepared I suppose." he stated. "What part of Earth did you grow up?"

"On the Australian continent mostly," Syvar answered, "my parents traveled a lot, but when we didn't travel we lived close to Alice Springs. How about you?" He gently pressed the hypospray against his patient's throat, releasing the contents of the vial with a hiss as he pressed the trigger.

"Brixham is the name of the town I was born in. Its in Devon County in the south western part of England. It had something to boast about, a replica of the Golden Hind, the ship that Sir Francis Drake sailed. I was able to step onto its deck. It was a thing of wonder for a boy with a lot of imagination."

"Sounds like you had a very exciting childhood," Syvar marveled, hearing the pride in the other ensign's voice. "And now you get to sail a starship," he added with a chuckle. "What made you go into operations?"

"Well, I love science and engineering equally, and I thought that Operations was a mixture of both and flexible in some ways. Part of it is being able to find something that someone may like but are unable to get said item, I can go through channels to find a way for the person to get the item."

"Ah, a little like solving a mystery then? Or a kind of challenge?" Syvar tapped a gloved finger against his chin in thought. "And what if you can't get the requested item?"

"Then if I don't succeed the first time, I'd widen the search pattern and see if I can find it or, find a suitable substitute for it. "

"Why not just replicate it?" Syvar arched an eyebrow at him in curiosity. "Anything material can be replicated, right?"

"Replicating can be good, but, sometimes there is something in having an original, or something made by a master craftsman. Like say, you can replicate a cake but, if someone makes a cake by hand, it seems to taste better, if they know how to cook that is. I remember eating a cake my mother made, it was delicious. I ate the same cake after getting it from a replicater and well, there was something lacking. It was delicious but it lacked the so called essence." Hawkins stated.

"It lacked love," Syvar answered knowingly. "My mother loves to bake. I'm afraid I'm not much of a cook at all. My mother is a very caring person... She would take care of anyone who needs it. I think she would agree with your sentiment."

"Exactly, the missing ingredient is love. I like the sound of your mother. She and my mother would probably get along might even become friends." Hawkins responded with a warm chuckle.

"Quite likely," the young doctor agreed. "Well, we just have to update your vaccinations and then you're good to go." He smiled encouragingly. "Also, I'm of the opinion that replicated food can taste just as well. Even programming an intricate recipe must include a certain amount of time and love."

"You do have a point there. I can see someone doing taste tests just to create another sort of recipe." Michael nodding thoughtfully. "By the way, what do you like to do in your free time?" thinking to himself that there could be a friendship developing between him and Syvar.

"If we're at a planet I like to get lost in the woods," Syvar admitted, "but when stuck on a ship I mostly tend to the orchid in my quarters, practice yoga or see to my martial arts training. What about you?"

"I like to be outdoors as well, and I have varied interests that keep me occupied whilst on a ship."Michael replied. "While on Avalon Station, the chief of staff had a miniature garden she loved to tend to. She would have loved to see your orchid. She is very much into having live plants, herbs to aid in natural healing."

Green eyes sparkled in excitement as Syvar regarded his patient. "So do I," he all but exclaimed, "when I have a chance I go scavenging for plants that can help with healing and I try to culture them. I can stay away and get myself lost for days."

"I can empathize with that. I had gone on an expedition with Captain Letsul in locating and gathering native herbs, and plant samples we were out in the woods for a little bit, it was great being out in nature and she seemed to be rather in tune with the surroundings. In fact she seemed rather relaxed, even though we did have to keep watch for predators that were native to that planet." a warm gentle smile touched his lips as he thought of Captain Letsul.

"You seem to have fond memories of Captain Letsul," Syvar observed, "perhaps...we could explore together sometime? When the opportunity arises?"

"I do have fond memories of her. She is an interesting woman." Michael replied with a smile. "I also would like to go exploring with you, and, maybe we can do some sparring as well."

"Oh I'd like that!" Syvar felt like a little boy in the proverbial candy store, but was just shy of clapping his hands with joy. "I'd like that very much. Going off alone is dangerous, and together we can keep an eye on each other and.." He fell silent. "I'm babbling again, aren't I?"

Michael chuckled softly at Syvar's enthusiasm. "I don't think you are babbling at all. You bring up very valid points, as to the safety of going exploring." his own eyes filled with enthusiasm. " It would be very exciting indeed."

"From a Vulcan point of view it is," Syvar pointed out, "I get frowned upon by other Vulcans. But I'll be looking forward to such a trip." He grinned happily. "Anyway you're cleared for duty."

Giving a nod, Michael got down from the examination table,"Thank you and I am looking forward to us having some adventures. If you are interested, I can also take you sailing on a tall ship."

Eyes widening, the Vulcan stared at him. "S-sail?" he queried, "sounds interesting. I have never been on a boat before. Thankfully I do know how to swim..."

"Glad to hear that, we can plan on it sometime soon." Michael replied."Well off I go to take care of ship business. Thank you for seeing me."
