Let's Have a Runabout

Posted on 09 Aug 2021 @ 10:05pm by Ensign Adam Morgan & Lieutenant JG Harper Matthews

Mission: Picking up the pieces
Location: Space
Timeline: MD1 1900
740 words - 1.5 OF Standard Post Measure

This was a bit strange for Michael, he in some aspect was the senior member of the team, therefore he was leading this mission. He looked at Morgan after them getting the green light to proceed. "Okay Ensign Morgan lets get the show on the road." he stated. Then said "Captain Reynolds we are ready to launch!"

Harper sat quietly as Hawkins ran the team, prepared them for launch. She was confident that she was up to anything that came up so she worked on the console prepping some things, just in case.

"Okay, so I get the boosters put up and then we head back. Sounds like an easy peasy job there. Nothing to it." Michael said, as the runabout lifted off and headed away from the ship.

Adam Morgan had decided on a type two shuttle until he actually sat at the helm. He had a couple moments to get the shuttle prep up until he understood why he hated the type two's in the first place. As he had sat back in the chair and watched others board the small craft, he suddenly felt deja vu to the fact of feeling suddenly ill. A fact known for most Starfleet officers known as "class 2 claustrophobia" in the database.

Morgan had felt it fast so he decided for the team to use a runabout and as he sat at the console now in the forward section, he felt much better as he punched in the controls for the final sequence of liftoff.

"Glad you decided to have the runabout instead of the shuttle, Morgan. Makes a bit more sense, especially in case you will have to beam me to safety." Hawkins said. "Need to figure out the best possible places for me to put the signal boosters." He then turned to the woman he'd not talked to yet.

"Hi, I'm Lieutenant Hawkins, Chief Engineer, pleased to make your acquaintance Ensign Matthews." holding out his hand towards her.

"Same to you sir." Harper said with a smile as she accepted his hand. "Always nice to see someone else in yellow even if you do patch up damage I may cause if we get into a scuffle." She added, a playful sparkle flashing in her
eyes.

Michael chuckled, "Fair enough." he turned towards the viewscreen and said to Morgan when they were out in the 'asteroid' field. "Why don't we start there and I'll get going on setting up the boosters." point towards what looked like a decent spot. "be ready to transport me out there." he responded. Stepping towards the transporter pad.

"Guess I'm one of them lonely red shirts heh?" Morgan joked as he steadied the shuttle and headed towards the smaller parts of the asteroid field where the transport was going to take place. He spoke again, "Hope you're ready, this could be bumpy if we don't get a move on," Morgan stated.

"Red is a powerful colour." Harper stated randomly. "It represents courage and strength so I am quite happy you are wearing that shade Ensign Morgan." she added not taking her eyes off the display panel. "It also signifies danger, blood and fire but I think we will skip that part." she uttered quietly under her breath.

Michael was on the transporter pad and said "Okay energize." through the communications on the EVA suit.

"Stay safe Lieutenant." Harper replied as she energised the man from view. Using the panel she re-energised him and spoke, "Report sir?"

"I'm all here and I'll get this set up then come back to the runabout. I am thinking that at least three more will be good to enhance the signal. And then we can get back to the ship."

A few hours later, all of the signal boosters are put into place, and Michael was safely back inside the runabout. "Okay let's get back to the Andromeda and see what we will pick up, shall we? Take us home, Morgan if you would please."

Ensign Adam Morgan released the hand on the controls before him and made the shuttle turnabout the way they came. Morgan looked out the viewport one last time and then moved the shuttle to full impulse back to the Andromeda.
