ON:

Jon was just putting the finishing touches to his ready room. On the shelf to the left were his goddess statues and his replica of the sacred spoon of Kat 'aria which his mother insisted each of her children carry with them to remember their background. It was a ugly thing. He would have preferred her to have given them a replica of the holy bowl of Xeon. At least that was more colourful. His door chimed, he assumed this was his new XO officially reporting in.

"Come in," Jon said staring at the door.

Amelia walked in whistling to herself, "Good morning captain. Hope you slept well?"

"Yes I did. Did you win anymore pokers games after I left you number one?" he asked placing the ugly spoon back on his desk as he walked to the replicator. "Coffee?"

"I'm afraid not. I called it an early night after polishing off another blood wine," she said, "And yes I would love a coffee. Black please. No sugar."

Jon ordered the drink and another coffee for himself but white. He placed them on his desk and indicated the chair opposite. "So we have our first orders," he picked up a padd.

Amelia sat and idly picked up the spoon in front of her with the intention of stiring her coffee. "So sir what have Starfleet HQ decided to bestow upon us,"

He looked up and balked, "NOOOOOooooo," he said suddenly. "Thats the spoon of Kat 'aria. A representation but still a highly revered holy relic from back home. I am trying to figure out how to mount it on the wall with the goddesses."

She raised it up and examined it. "A spoon by any other name is still a spoon sir,"

Jon swiped it off her. "Tell that to my mother," he said darkly.

"I make it my business never to come between a man, his mother and his spoon," she replied deadpan.

Jon kept his face just as straight but was laughing inside. "Wise philosphy." He placed the ugly spoon back on the shelf making a note to contact engineering about getting it up displayed on the wall.

"Right so starfleet are sending up to the vast unexplored reaches of the Beta quadrent. But first of all we have to go investigate something they have spotted 7 parsects from the Corteus system and they are not sure what it is. They have also identified it as an excellent area to drop a long range communications relay. Between you and me I imagine we will be dropping a fair few communications relays as we explore further out. But obviously we need all the refitting and repairs sorted before we can embark."

"Sounds fairly routine sir. May I suggest a readiness exercise in the meantime for Senior crew. It can also be team building if you like and I'll start a series of regular drills," she added.

"Sounds good to me," Jon nodded. "I'll leave you to come up with some suitable team building senario's. Also readiness drills in each area. Perhaps even throw in a Kobayishi Maru test if you really want to test the crews mettle," he suggested.

"Sounds like fun sir," Amelia nodded. "Do we have any information on the object thats been sighted or are we going in blind?"

"We only have a visual from the labs on the starbase," Jon answered sliding a Padd from the stack on his desk towards her. "The science boffins here haven't been able to narrow down any information on composition. They are keen that we retrieve it and bring it to them for analysis if it does turn out to be something exciting."

"Well I have already met the chief engineer and our new doctor this morning," Amelia told him. "And I look forward to meeting the rest of the senior staff in due course."

"As do I Lieutenant," Jon agreed. "Especially the science chief when they arrive as I want the artefacts containment unit doubly checked over."

"Also my ex wife and son are onboard and we will be sharing custody when we hammer that schedule out. A fun conversation for today," he grimaced. "Shes working in Stellar cartography part time, so I was hoping you can try have us opposite each other shift wise where possible?" he asked. "He's nearly 11 but still won't be happy if we have to leave him a lot with a holo nanny. I'm sure you have other family's to try work around as well."

"Aye sir. I'll try my best," she nodded.

"Excellent, thank you. I don't envy you having to finalise all the shift rotas nor miss it," he chuckled. "Okay I don't have anything further unless you do?" Jon asked.

"Very good Captain," Amelia nodded.

"Dismissed then," Jon said.
