ON:

“Lieutenant,” Jon said to Mitchell, “I’d like a little chat. Join me in my ready room please.”

"Aye, Captain," Mitchell said with a nod. The two men stood and left the bridge.

When the ready room door was closed behind them the Captain rounded his desk and sat. Mitchell stood before him with arms crossed comfortably behind his back.

"Take a seat," Jon indicated and as he did he pulled up his bio just to check he was remembering what he thought he was. He spotted it, "I understand you completed the command exam but it was quite a while back. I definitely think you are far more than a pilot Graham," Jon said seriously, "But you don't look to have had a whole lot of experience in the command seat.

What's going on there?" he asked.

Mitchell smiled ruefully and shrugged. "I suppose I would have asked about it before long, sir. Just didn't seem too important at the moment." The truth was that Mitchell was enjoying the life of a junior officer. He had a respectable amount of rank and responsibility, but not too much. Work was still fun and didn't feel like...well, work.

"Right well I think we are going to get you rotated in for some shifts in the big chair," Jon said simply. "I think you need just that little push out of your comfort zone and I need good people I can trust in my chair when I'm not."

"Well, thank you, sir," Mitchell said, "I'm honored that you trust me that much with your ship." Then after a beat he added, "So when do I start? As a regular duty, I mean?"

"I'll have a word with Lieutenant Fox once shes back off the away team. Get her to rota you in," Jon said. "In my eyes as soon as possible. Unless you feel you need a bit of a refresher?" he probed. It had been a while since he had done the command exam.

Mitchell thought about it for a second. It might not hurt to do a couple of training sessions on the holodeck. Then again, he didn't want to appear too uncertain to the captain. He had completed the training at the Academy and had passed with good marks. That was enough. Besides, chances were that he would end up doing this duty on the back end of the graveyard shift. "I can handle it, sir."

"Very well," Jon responded. "I'll let you get back to the pilot seat then and look forward to your command reports."

"Aye, sir," Mitchell replied in his most authoritative voice. He executed a perfect about-face and exited the ready room. Then, resuming his station, he settled in, put his hands on either side of the console, and sighed. "Don't screw this up," he muttered to himself.
