Deception

Mission: Mission 3 - Whom gods destroy ...
Location: True's Office
Timeline: MD2, 0900 hours
806 words - 1.6 OF Standard Post Measure

Four hours....

Syvar shook his head as he stared at his computer. He had four hours to recover the captain's psychological file. A file he had no access to unless the chief counselor referred it to him. He already had the three demanded vials in his pocket, now all he needed was the demanded file.

He ran his hands through his already tousled hair, then across his face before tapping his commbadge. "Counselor Keading, are you free?"

True started at the sound of the chirp and the voice. She tapped her commbadge back. "Of course Syvar, meet me in my office in a few minutes? I'll be right there." True untangled herself from the kitten she'd been playing with. And, remembering Syvar was allergic she changed her clothes and washed her hands before leaving Jon's quarters.

Syvar shut down his computer, cast an anxious glance around, and hurried towards the counselor's office. Since leaving the XO's quarters he had managed to clean himself up and look presentable, but there was something about him that seemed off, as he waited for True to arrive.

"Hello Syvar," True said as she made it to her office. She opened the door and invited him inside. "What can I do for you?"

He hurried inside, quickly sweeping the room with his eyes. "I need your help. I have a study ongoing and I need access to the Captain's psychological file for that," he lied. He hoped to be convincing enough, though his bearing already indicated to a trained eye that his explanation was a lie.

"That's rather an odd request Syvar. May I ask why you need it specifically? Although I am chief counselor, I am not Jon's counselor and I probably wouldn't even look at it unless I felt there was something wrong." True said as she indicated the sofa to him.

"I'm comparing the psychological file to other case files I've requested to see a difference or change in behavior since taking command," Syvar lied, all the while avoiding eye contact. He had to be convincing but he was no liar by nature. He could do it but it never felt right.

That got her attention. "On what grounds? Do you have evidence that there's been a change?"

"The study is to see if command does exhibit changes, not to prove that they have occurred." He looked up at last. "Please, I need those files, it's important." His eyes darted across the room, as if to expect something very bad to happen. "Please.."

"I could lose my job over this. Tell me what's really going on, you're scared. I can keep secrets Syvar, I'm a counselor."

"I have orders," Syvar said, bowing his head. "from Commander Fox. She ordered me to get the file, and I have no choice..." He hesitated. "I'm very scared, everyone's at risk if I don't get her the file."

True frowned. This was most unusual but he was terrified and that really startled her. Syvar had always been a fairly easy going person. Something was truly wrong. She picked up a PADD, entered her access code and pulled up the file, transferring it to another PADD so that it was the only file on there and then handing it to Syvar. "I hope I don't regret this."

"Probably," Syvar murmured as relief flooded across his face. "But I'm grateful," he added, "Just... please don't tell the captain, or anyone? If this gets out, you could be at risk too. I don't want anyone else to be at risk. But I didn't know what else to do. Thank you... I know this will save lives in the end."

"Syvar, I can't promise that. Jon and I have kind of a special bond, he might be able to read certain things from me. But I know he would help you. Tell me what's going on?"

Fear touched his eyes as he looked at her. "No I can't tell you, please don't ask me to tell you. If I do, he'll certainly know and he can't know. Him knowing, anyone knowing, will put everyone in danger. For now... it's only me. Please... don't tell him. I beg you, don't tell him." He started to back away towards the door. "I don't have much time... I have to go."

True watched as he fled, a feeling of dread settling into the bottom of her stomach. She hadn't been this uneasy since Yorktown. How was she going to keep this from Jon? He couldn't sense thoughts, that was true, but he could certainly sense her emotions, he was rather good at that especially with their bond going further. She sighed and stood up. She had to come up with a plan and fast.
