Mission: Mission 4 - Race against the machine
Location: USS Andromeda Sickbay
Timeline: after the ship contact
1082 words - 2.2 OF Standard Post Measure

It was late, and he was alone in sickbay. Syvar did like the quiet, though right now he actually rather be home. He was just doing his rounds, checking up on a few patients and making sure the remaining wards were clean and ready just in case. He turned his head as he heard the doors slide open and shut, then blinked as an Asian looking male in teal uniform walked in.

Unaware of prospect visitors, the young Vulcan walked up to the newcomer. "Hi, I'm Syvar, can I help you?" he asked, while sizing the man up. He looked uninjured, but one could never know for sure. "Doctor Kuroka isn't on duty right now if you're looking for the chief."

"No, thank you. I am Dr Ki the Chief Medical Officer from the Merlin. I have a few experiments running over on the Merlin and I thought the Andromeda's computers might be able to help. I am sorry to bother you at this late hour." Michael said as he headed for an open terminal.

"Oh it doesn't bother me at all, sickbay is pretty lonely at this hour so I do welcome the company." Syvar answered brightly as he approached. "What kind of experiments are you running?"

"I am running experiments on the effects of duplication on the original DNA. I saw in the Andromeda's logs that recently the Executive Officer was duplicated. So I thought I would take a look at the mission logs and see if there was any information that could assist me." Michael said as he began to look for the desired file. "There are a number of illnesses that can benefit from this research. We may even be able to cure some of them." Michael could sense himself getting on his Diagnostician's soapbox. So he stopped himself before he went on a rant.

"It was the DNA that caused us to notice that the other woman wasn't my Fox," Syvar observed, "there was a kind of phase variance that I can't explain." He quirked an eyebrow at the man. "Have you considered using twins?"

Ki stroked his chin for a moment. "Hmmmm it may be worth looking at twins. The approach that I was going to take was to look at the anomalous duplications. If a person can be duplicated it may be possible to duplicate exact replicas of a person's organs for transplant should they need. Think about the possibility of duplicating a patient who is suffering from Bendaii's brain. It may be possible to cure them. However, the idea of studying twins is a tough one, as there are not many sets of twins readily available."

"What about mice from a same litter?" the younger doctor asked curiously, "trials on people without proper research isn't exactly ethical, unless you're already ready for such trials?" He thought of the little rat he kept in his quarters, and its siblings of which he had made sure they'd gotten proper homes too. "Or rats?" he added, swallowing a few times as he didn't seem to really like that suggestion.

Michael began to copy the data onto a PADD to take back to the Merlin. Although the Ensign did have a point. "I do not plan on testing on people any time soon. In fact I am no where near testing my theory as of yet. Right now we are in the information gathering phase. However, when I go to testing I will be sure to explore your suggestions. Animals from the same litter while not exact genetic duplicates should provide enough data to proceed."

"Could always breed them, using recombinants and inhibitors," Syvar suggested, almost cheerfully. He giggled as his tiny rat climbed up from the pocket of his coat into his neck. "Ratty no, you shouldn't even be here, get back." He giggled again. "Sorry Doctor Ki, Ratty got in my coat earlier, and I haven't had time to get her home."

Michael cocked an eyebrow at the sight of the rat in Sick Bay. He was under the impression that pets should be kept away from the sterile area that is Sick Bay. However, the rules on the Andromeda could be different. "I will have to explore those possibilities as well. Of course before I can do anything I must finish my research and submit to the medical board for review and authorization to begin testing. In the meantime I am gathering all of the information that I can about genetic duplication in humans. Including those that were caused by transporter incidents."

"There are several on record," Syvar mused, "and I suppose one can also use the differences or similarities on mirror universe incidents? Surely something about them is on file too? There have been several incidents of crossovers as well and I have no doubt those people were subjected to medical scans as well." Including his own XO and her counterpart, though he somehow felt reluctant to discuss them now even if he had made the DNA remark himself only minutes ago. He felt obligated to protect their privacy, and more importantly, his mate's privacy.

"Quite so. I plan on getting most of the data that I can and then reading on it before I proceed. I have already read through all that LCARS had on the so called Mirror Universe. It seems that they do prescribe to my theory. They are exact replicas. However, I doubt that any of them would allow experiments to be performed on themselves." Michael added a small chuckle after the last sentence. Most of what he read about the Mirror Universe was that their counterparts were evil to say the least. "I wonder if I would be given approval for an incursion to get some genetic material. All I would need is a small sample to compare with this universe's counterpart and then I can be off to the races. Thanks for the idea Doctor." Michael added with a smile as his PADD made a small chime, indicating that the upload had finished. "Well Doctor thank you for all of your input it has been most helpful. But now I think that I have enough reading to keep me busy."

"Happy to help sir," Syvar smiled, "if you need anything just call, I'll be around."
