"Girl 'friends'," Vern said making little quotation marks with his fingers. "Relationships are complicated, heck even friendships with women are complicated. It's rarely what you think it should be."

And now the continuation .....

"Yep she friend zoned me but then gets upset at me for other stuff,” Eddie admitted. “What should I do?”

"Girls are weird. They think we should be able to read their minds and know what they want and when we can't do that they give us little hints about what they want which of course we are completely clueless about. My advice and I don't want to step on any toes here," Vern looked to Jon and True. "Is to actually ask Tia how she feels. She may not even know, but you could be honest with her and tell her how you feel. At least things will be out in the open and no one will be trying to guess anything anymore."

True smiled so broadly she had to turn her head away to keep Vern from seeing her. It was just something she would say. Perhaps she'd rubbed off on him a bit or he on her.

“Thanks but I think I already did that and she’s just been weirder,” he said. “Why are you woman so weird True?” He asked.

True was trying really hard not to laugh. "We're not actually that different Eddie. Our brains work much the same as men we're just taught to react differently. Tia is a special case because she was kind of raised away from society so she might have a few . . . eccentricities. Be patient. Ask her what she's feeling even if you can tell. She might just explain why."

“I can’t tell everything she’s feeling. I’m still learning to work out what every emotion is,” Eddie said irritated At himself. Wouldn’t life be easier if he could fully understand what she was feeling. “And shutting out everyone else.”

“It’ll come Eddie,” Jon said gently. Now he had both his son and Trues brother seemingly upset. “Follow Trues advice ehh. Shall we,” he looked at the mostly empty plates and decided to smoothly change the subject for the moment, “have some dessert?”

"That's a good idea." True said liking that he was trying to distract their two depressed men. "I bet it's something good, maybe ice cream," she winked at Eddie.

"Ugh, more food?" Vern said jokingly. "I'm so stuffed."

"I have a feeling you can make room for it if it involves sugar." True teased right back at him.

"I'll have Verns if he doesn't want it," Eddie said innocently.

"Hey, keep your paws off youngin." Vern joked.

"Its churros and chocolate sauce. Keeping in the Mexican theme," Jon grinned getting up and siding away the dishes then ordered the replicator. Eddie got up to help him ferry some bits back to the table.

"Top you up Vern?" Jon asked reaching for the bottle. "Sweetheart?"

"Sure," Vern held out his glass but True shook her head, giving Jon a small smile. It was the first time he'd ever called her sweetheart that she could recall. Vern could drink as much as he wanted but she was still going to confront him about what was going on later.

"I really enjoyed this. Thank you for inviting me," Vern said suddenly.

"Your welcome," Jon said. He grabbed a churro himself before Eddie went to town on what was left. "Lets hope its something we get to do again. As far as I'm concerned Trues family now so that makes you family.

"Family huh? Does that mean you're going to make an honest woman out of my sister?" Vern was lightly teasing but he also wanted to ensure that Jon was completely serious about letting True have a choice in the matter.

"Well," Jon said carefully. The man was teasing but he was also seriously wanting to know his sister was with the right guy.

He looked at True, it should have been a "them" conversation and he had been planning to bring it up at the picnic. Unfortunately Atlas's antics and him ending up naked in the corridor had put a stop to that. And once they had him safely back in Trues quarters the moment had seemed to pass so he had been waiting for another time to bring it up. With the planet killer outside perhaps there might not be one.

"I was working up to asking her to move in Vern but honestly If she would have me I would marry her in a heartbeat." His eyes still locked with her beautiful blue ones. "Of course I see I would need to ask your permission and secure a suitable ring first," he stated seriously. "I do want to do things right," he said honestly. "Ask you properly, go down on one knee and tell you just how amazing you are and how I cannot nor ever want to imagine a life without you in it," he said simply.

Eddie stopped eating, a churro clamped in his mouth as he watched things. Jon had of course spoken to him about asking True to move in and he liked her and wanted them both to be happy, but how was her brother going to react? What was True going to say to that?

True's eyes widened. She had always seen them getting married at some point but this was a bit earlier than she'd expected and she kind of felt like there were things that needed taking care of first. She took a deep breath and tried not to bite her brother's head off for sticking his nose into other people's business. "Well I would happily move in with you if it didn't bother Eddie . . . . but I think we should probably have this conversation in private about marriage. And I think maybe Vern should focus on his own life and not mine."

Vern seemed to realize how upset she was at him and backed off. "Only teasing True, I didn't mean to start something, honest. I should go." He got up, hoping that he hadn't ruined anything for her and headed for the door without another word.

“It doesn’t bother me True,” Eddie said, “Dad did you just propose?”

“When I propose there will be a ring and me on one knee,” Jon said simply. Trues emotional reaction was clear she was not ready for that idea and he didn’t want her panicking.

“Ermmm,” Jon said not sure whether to be embarrassed or not watching the other man leave, “are you going after your brother? I think ... I think he’s lost someone True. We can talk later if you want to about other things of course but I think he needs you right now.”

Eddie nodded. “He’s all mixed up and sad.”

"Yeah," True sighed. "We need to have a talk anyway." She got up and kissed Jon on the cheek. "I'm sorry, I'll be back in a bit."
