1150 words - 2.3 OF Standard Post Measure

ON:

Standing outside of Holodeck 2, Rose was preparing one of her custom programs she used for personal training for the phaser reaccreditation of the senior staff. She was unsure when they had last been accredited so she figured now was as good a time as any. Finishing up her program, Rose tapped her combadge, “Lieutenant Belikov to Commander Reynolds, please report to Holodeck 2 at your next earliest convenience” she said simply before entering the Holodeck.

Jon had a feeling he knew what this was. He had put the request in for his annual reaccreditation. He hadn't expected to be summoned but hey it worked.

Inside, the room was completely black with the exception of a four meter round circular platform in the middle. The platform itself had a slightly raised lip running along the outside with a gap on one side to allow access into the circle. The interior was divided into two equal halves, each with their own colour. One half was blue and the other was yellow. Standing in the circle in the blue half, Rose looked up at Jonathan, “ah Commander, thank you for coming”

"Thank you for fitting me in," Jon said. He had seen a similar set up. It was obvious he needed to be in the yellow half so he walked over and waited for her to explain how she ran things.

"you're welcome, Lets begin" Rose said, reaching behind her, grabbing a hand phaser and throwing it over to Jon, "hit as many lights as possible before the timer runs out. sweet and simple" she said pulling out her tricorder and flipping it open "ready?"

"Ready," Jon said catching the phaser. It was basically target practice. He did as instructed giving it his best shot. When the timer buzzed signifying that the exercise was done he turned round to face her once more. "Is it going to get faster?" he asked. It felt like an easy setting even for Jon. Perhaps she was evaluating a base line for his abilities.

Rose thought for a moment, “alright, let’s give you a challenge” she said, pulling out her own phaser, “Computer, level 14” she ordered, before giving the Commander a wink.

"Okay your on Lieutenant," Jon said. He knew she would be better but if he could attempt to keep pace that would be enough for his pride at least.

Giving a nod, Rose smiled, “start”. Straight away, Rose hit two targets without looking away from Jon, “it’s not my usual method of training, but I guess it’ll do”

Jon hit two more over her shoulder as she spoke to him. He wasn't sure if that meant she was dumbing things down for him perhaps. "Well thank you for accommodating me," he settled on.

"When I was chief of security on the Santiago we would do something similar to this and a holographic situation where you actually had to shoot more than lights. Programmed the assailants being able to dodge and find cover etc. To be fair," he said as he blasted a couple more, "I think it was more based on some Klingon scenario's than federation but I found it put staff through their paces. I must admit since going for a command I haven't managed to keep up regular training though."

hitting another two targets, Rose nodded, "sounds like an interesting program. i'd love to take a look at it"

"No problem," Jon said hitting another three in succession. "I'll get you a copy. What do you think? Can I hold my own?" he asked.

Rose smiled, “floating coloured dots across the universe tremble at your name Commander”

Jon appreciated the humour, "So did I pass the exam? Or is there more dot to scare witless?"

Rose nodded, “I’ll grant you know how to use a Phaser, you are free to hunt down all the coloured dots you wish” she said, noting the passing grade in the ship’s log. “Are there any other weapons you wish to be certified on? Though the XO may disagree I am sure there will be away missions you wish to go on”

"Oh yes Fox doesn't plan on letting me get much fun," he quipped. "We will see how that pans out. Well I might as well get accredited for a phaser rifle too while we are here. Be silly not too."

Rose nodded, "alright" she said, taking the two phasers and returning them to the locker, "have you have much experience with the Phaser Rifle sir?" she asked, taking two rifles out and turning back to him.

"A bit," Jon said laughing. "I was in security once remember. Go one what's the required test on these?"

Rose smiled, “Computer, engage program Belikov AR-558”. A moment later, the area around them changed to a dusty, misty valley, “tell me, how familiar are you with the Dominion war?”

"Familiar enough that its painful and uncomfortable to talk about in terms of Betazed," Jon informed her. He didn't add that a sneaky media reporter had manipulated things to try drag him into that recently.

“Betazed? What do you mean?” Rose asked, she knew of what happened during the Domioion war and had her own first hand experience with Jem’Hadar.

“I mean the occupation. I know plenty of people back home who suffered through that,” Jon said in a tone that he hoped implied he didn’t want to get much further into reliving things.

“Well than this program should be very informative for me” she said stepping forward to stand infront of her, “this is the sight of a lesser known communications tower used by the Dominion and Alliance to spy on one another. All you have to do is prevent the Jem’Hadar from getting to you for as long as possible, understood?”

"Roger that," Jon nodded. He raised the rifle up and when the Jem'Hadar started advancing he aimed for chests. He could here an instructor at the academy in his head say, "Chest is best forget the rest. Crank your phaser up to maximum and mo through the enemy."

Rose stood back and watched Jon’s performance. She was impressed with how he was handling the rifle, but she was also seeing how he handled himself under pressure.

Jon smiled briefly as the programme shut down again. He turned to his security chief. "Well did I pass that one?"

Rose took down a few last notes before looking up at the Commander, “you did. You are now re-certified, congratulations”

“Excellent. Thank you Lieutenant,” Jon said happily.

Rose smiled, “you are most welcome. If you ever wish to be certified on anything else I’m sure my staff can assist you”
