Amelia spotted the Captain making the rounds with the cake and her face lit up. "I'll be right back." she whispered in Mitchell's ear as she stood and made a beeline for Reynolds. She grabbed to slices with a quick "Thanks" and came straight back, placing on of the plates in front of Mitchell.

And now the continuation ............

ON:

Mitchell examined his slice and grinned. "Thanks," he said, picking up the fork and digging in. In truth he wasn't into sweets that much, but Amelia couldn't have known that, so he would accept it graciously, like a gift. "So," he said, his mouth full of cake, "you've got it pretty bad for me."

Amelia blinked then chuckled "It's only cake Mitchell...." she smiled coyly but inwardly, she was surprised that she had shown her hand so much. She normally played her cards closer to the chest. She asked nonchalantly "if I had, is that a bad thing?"

The helmsman shook his head. "No," he said, wiping some frosting off his lips with a napkin, and then casting a warm smile her way. "It's enchanting. But all kidding aside I have to warn you. Most women end up thinking of me as a regret."

Amelia placed her hand on his and looked him in the eye. "I think regret is a waste of time. Life is too short, time is too precious, and the stakes are too high to dwell on what might have been."

Mitchell looked around, checking to see if anyone was around who might miss them. It didn't seem so. Everyone was enjoying themselves. He looked back at Amelia and tilted his head towards the door. "Want to get out of here?" he asked, his voice taking on a devilish tone.

A smiled formed on her mouth "I though it was the Captain who was a Betazoid, but you just read my mind. Hang on a sec." She got Malone's attention and when he came over she whispered in his ear. He grinned and nodded and ducked down, returning with a bottle of Saurian brandy and two glasses. "This one is from my private collection." She winked at him "Thanks, I owe you one." She picked up the bottle and the two glasses and turned back to Mitchell with a twinkle in her eye. "Lead the way."

Mitchell stood, grinning like the cat who had just caught the prize canary. With his hand on her lower back the two strode casually out of the room.

Aidan felt a bit at a loss. He glanced sideways at Emme. "Anyone you want to meet with?" he asked her. He wasn't a fan of crowds, and certainly didn't like to be the center of attention. but he was also too much of a wallflower to go out and mingle just like that. "Anywhere you want to go?"

"You pick." Emme grinned at him. "I'm usually the social one. You should come out of your shell and make a new friend." She knew of Aidan's little argument with Haulval however, and wasn't about to suggest they head in that direction.

Though Carlie would have been content to hang around True for the entire rest of the party, Haulval seemed ready to leave and get back to work fairly soon after the girl finished her piece of cake. In his mind, they made their required socially-demanded appearance and there was little reason to further the visit as it was completely unproductive time. He had also perceived that monopolizing True's time was unfair to her. She would, most likely be trying to mingle with unfamiliar shipmates and get to know new people. "We should leave," he surmised, resting a hand on her shoulder and nodding to the counselor. "Thank you, Doctor. I hope you have a productive evening."

"Perhaps we should chat with Lilura, rescue her from the boy," Aidan murmured Emme, while watching Haulval interact with the counselor. "Or engage the doctor? She seems lonely too."

"I think we should wait and see what happens," Emme said, she had her eye on the Captain's son but he needed to learn to hold his own in conversations with other races.

Lilura was eating bites of her cake while watching Eddie oggling over her. She didn't mind as kitlings were the future for any society, just some societies embracing that culture more, others much less. In L'Tandrey, Soliquoy, Soliodaran, Sumerian, and most other L'Tandrey Protectorate cultures, family was paramount so that culture and laws lifted and supported birthing and raising kids. Thus, the inquisitiveness of a Kitling was fine, and Lilura was adept at redirecting any questions that might infringe into areas the kitling wasn't ready for yet. She opened her mouth so Eddie could check out her teeth, then she whispered a 'between you and me' and then her large fangs extended out from behind her large canines while her ears laid back. There was a reason there was an open spot between her canines and the next tooth back, a place for her venom fangs to extend, and Eddie got to see this first hand.

Seeing the scene unfold but not knowing it was a demonstration, Aidan briefly touched Emme's arm to draw her attention before breaking into a run towards the boy. There was a screech and a flurry of blue which beat him to it as Sherlock appeared out of nowhere, hissing and screeching as he got himself between the boy and the chief engineer. He hovered protectively before the boy until his master appeared to draw the child away.

Lilura sensed the quickly incoming flying bird/reptile/saurian with her vibration, thermal, and auric senses. She stood up and hissed in return, her claws coming out on her hands as well. This creature was between the Captain's kitling and her, and she would protect the Captain's kitling with her life if it made any threatening move towards Eddie. She sensed and saw other crew coming over, so she called out, "I'll handle this creature, keep the Captain's Kitling Safe." She prepared herself to have a meal in the worst case scenario.

"Are you alright little man?" Aidan asked, concern in his eyes while his pet seemed occupied with the officer, making her keep a distance.

"Yes fine. Lilura was just showing me her second teeth," Eddie said. He looked round thinking he was in trouble. "I didn't ask her too but look …. how cool ….."

It was then, with the nonchalance of the new officer, that she remembered that Jon had mentioned the new Science Officer had a pet 'dragon', which this flying creature could easily be it. However, before she could say anything about calming the pet down before it became a snack, Jon had come over.

Jon walked over and put hands on his sons shoulders and looked at Lilura. "Lieutenant, perhaps a crowded party is not the best place." Then he turned to Datari and his pet who seemed to be flapping around in a frenzy. "Lieutenant calm down. The chief engineer is not trying to harm my son. Can you ask, "he indicated the mini dragon, "Sherlock was it? to stand down."

Lilura, not sure if Eddie was out of danger yet, performed a light snarl that lifted her yellow markings into more prominence to show this creature 'danger, venomous predator', added, "Please have 'Sherlock' stand down, I will not allow it to harm Eddie or our crew."

"Sherlock.." Aidan said softly, calling the blue to order with just the mention of his name. "Easy now. See? No danger." The blue didn't seem convinced and hovered before the boy, studying him for a second before finding a perch on his master's shoulder. The Trill turned towards the engineer. "I'm sorry ma'am...I hope he didn't startle you?"

When the Dragon hovered by Eddie, Lilura's tail shifted to be near to get ready to snatch it out of the air if it did anything untowards the Kitling. When Aidan asked his question, she got ready to answer, but, then, she was already forgotten as everyone's attention turned towards Eddie.

Aiden turned to the boy. "Or you? He's really very friendly, just very protective, especially of children."

"I love him," Eddie said his eyes wide looking over the unusual animal. "Dad can I have one?"

"Look what you have started Lieutenant," Jon chuckled.

"I have no idea where they come from exactly sir, so I couldn't help you get him one even if I wanted to. I got him on pure chance, when I was a teenager. Didn't know what he was at that time either and I still don't know what exactly he is, beyond resembling a small dragon." Aidan shrugged slightly.

Naiya had, like everyone else, been startled by the incident but it was clearly a misunderstanding and no-one was harmed nor in danger now, so she didn't get involved. They couldn't all just crowd around, however she was fascinated by the creature she heard referred to as "Sherlock" and after the first of the explanations had been discussed she slipped softly towards Aidan and Emm. "I'm sorry to interrupt" she began as she approached, offering a hand to introduce herself. "I'm Naiya Hope, I'm a doctor. We haven't been introduced yet but I hope you won't be unhappy to come and see me, I know I do put a lot of people off by the arduous nature of most visits to my part of the ship!" she chuckled, hoping to lighten the random approach she'd just made to a couple of strangers out of the blue.

"Only my husband doesn't like doctors." Emme joked. "Pleasure to meet you," she offered her hand. "I'm Emme, this is Aidan. And Sherlock, which I'm sure you already noticed." Emme held out her arm so Sherlock would hopefully land on her and calm down.
